The Real Reason Why We Are Worried and Anxious

Everyday we have a lot of reasons to be worried and anxious about,  like am i still going to wake up tomorrow morning? will my heart still continue to beat the next day? how will i provide for my family’s needs? will i be able pay my home rent, my utility bills, worried about rising costs of groceries, car fuel, increase in taxes etc. and the lists goes on and on.  But Jesus in the sermon of the mount tells us not to be worried or anxious (Matthew 6:25). Jesus will reveal to us why as you read on.

Read the below verses from the Bible – Matthew 6:25-34

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?

28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Let us first look closely at the word ANXIETY,  the Greek word merimnao, pronounced mer-im-nah’-o, stems from the root word merimna; which means to be distracted, full of cares and anxiety. The deep meaning of merimnao is to be divided or drawn in different directions by preoccupying thoughts which affect the mind, body, and emotions. In other words, when we are anxious we are distracted and have lose focus.

in Matthew 6:25-30, Jesus divided the verses in 3 section: Life, Food & Drink and Clothing.

  1. LIFE : “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, (Matthew 6:25)
  2. FOOD & DRINK : what you will eat or what you will drink,…(Matthew 6:25)
  3. CLOTHING : nor about your body, what you will put on…(Matthew 6:25)

Now the question is, which is difficult to produce?

  • Life or Food?
  • Body or Clothing?

Of course you will answer Life is difficult to produce than food and body is difficult to produce compared to clothing. Jesus tells us,  “Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?

It is asking us, “Can’t God provide?” verse 26 says, Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

For God we are of great value, we are very precious. A kind and loving earthly father will provide for the needs of his children, how much more our heavenly father who is heaven He would surely provide for His children.

And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you (ver. 28-30). It is asking us, “Won’t God provide?

In verse 27 it says, And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? again asking us, “Can worry provide?” a saying goes, “Worry is like a rocking chair; it gives you something to do, but gets you nowhere”.

The real reason why we are worried and anxious is answered in verse 30,  But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Because you have little Faith!

The real reason why you are worried and anxious is because you have little Faith!

We worry because we think God can’t provide and God won’t provide.

Instead of worrying, the Lord commands us in verse 33, But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” a promise that comes with a condition. Seek first His Kingdom!

Spurgeon says, “Our anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, but only empties today of its strength”

It was also said, “Worry is a practical atheism. It is unbelief, acting like an orphan without heavenly father who’s made 6000 promises to you.

worry is a practical atheism

Friend, the Lord has instructed us “…do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all” (ver. 31-32).

Friend, it is comforting to know that our heavenly father knows that we need in this life. Therefore there is nothing to be worried and anxious about.

But take note of this, above promise applies only to his children. Now you may be asking, who is a child of God? Who are they? friend, A child of God is someone who have accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior in his life after confessing his sins to Him, having faith that Jesus died in the cross as a payment for all your sins! a child of God is someone who has surrendered their life to Jesus!

If you have not yet accepted Jesus in your life, this is right and exact moment to do it. Confess your all the wrong things you have done in your life to Jesus and turn away from all of those sins. Ask Jesus for His forgiveness and believe that his death and blood on the cross was the payment for all your sins. If you will do it sincerely and genuinely, He will consider you as His child and this is the very most important decision you will ever make in your entire life.

Heavenly father, thank you that you have made an awesome promise to me as your child, that you will provide all my needs and I have nothing to worry about. Let me have that perfect faith in you O Lord, for I believe in your words and they are the truth.

In HIS Presence…worry and anxiousness will fade away
