Matthew 5:13

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.

    1. Hello Vladimir, thank you for your comment. Matthew 5:13 was one of the topics at the sermon on the mount by Jesus. During Jesus’ time salt was treated differently compared today and it was considered of great value. Roman soldiers, when they work for the Roman Empire they are paid with salt. So if you’re not doing a good job, we have a saying that goes, he is not worth his salt because they’re paid with salt. The Latin word for salt is the word “salarium” from which you get the word, salary, that’s how it’s derived and to the Romans, they think that there is nothing more precious than the sun and salt. It’s so precious to the Roman thinking and not just the Romans, the Greeks too. The Greeks called salt “theion” from which you get the English word, theology, and so on which refers to God. So they say salt is something divine. Plato, the philosopher, says that salt is a “substance dear to the gods”. So salt is really important, it’s really precious. So when Jesus says, “You are the salt of the earth”, the disciples will receive that and say “wow, Jesus is saying I’m precious, I’m important, I have a great and important role to play in the world”, and that is so true. Followers and believers of Jesus are important in God’s point of view in this world and it’s therefore important for them to get out into the world to be an influence in the world.

Now, this is what apostle Paul said, in 2nd Timothy 3:2-5, but understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty for people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant so on and so forth. What the apostle Paul is saying is that this world, these last days, the days after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, in which we live is going to be difficult, because man will get worse and worse and we will get further and further from God, and believers and followers of Jesus we’re called into this world to stay in this world to be an influence to slow down and retard that ROTTING away of this world. So followers and believers of Jesus are to be the salt, to be that preserving influence. Colossians 4:6 also says, “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt,” So be someone who speaks graciously, kindly, with salt, it’s pleasant, not be a harsh, not be a difficult person but let this be the kind of life and speech you should have, that’s what we should be.

Followers and believers of Jesus like salt become useless, if they lose their distinctiveness. If salt is no more salty it is useless. If followers of Jesus are no more Christ-like and losing their walk with God, they are useless. To be fair, think about it – if you’re in school, in office and in your workplace but you behave and you think and you desire and you labor for exactly the same things as the world, what kind of an influence would you be? Pointless, useless so we become useless when we become saltless or we may cease to be an influence when we are like the world and we are not following Jesus.

have a nice day ahead Vladimir.
